ProLiant DL380 G6 Server - NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE - Thermal Condition Exceeded
Modified By admin on 1/19/2010 5:10:56 AM)

This issue is limited to the ProLiant DL380 G6 server. Other platforms are not affected.

DESCRIPTION

When an NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter is installed in Slot 1 or Slot 3 of a ProLiant DL380 G6 server, the adapter may experience a "thermal condition has been exceeded" error message, and the adapter loses link.

When this occurs, both of the following actions should be taken in order to prevent the adapter link loss from recurring as a result of this issue:

  • The NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter driver and NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter firmware (bundled as a single download) must be updated to version 4.0.516.
  • The fan speed must be set to "Increased Cooling" in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU)

If the NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter is installed in any slot other than slot 1 or slot 3, the following action should be taken:

  • The NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter driver and NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter firmware (bundled as a single download) must be updated to version 4.0.516.

Resetting the driver for the NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter will temporarily bring the link back online; however, unless the above actions are taken, the adapter is at risk for shutting down again.
The following error message, which indicates that a temperature threshold has been exceeded, is reported when this issue occurs:

NIC driver reports a thermal condition has been exceeded for the NC522SFP NIC .
EVENT ID : 130
SOURCE: NXND5HP

Note: The loss of link and the accompanying error message are the only symptoms associated with this issue.

Refer to the server hood label for the location of the PCI slots.

RESOLUTION

If the NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter is installed in slot 1 or slot 3 , both of the following actions should be taken in order to prevent the adapter link loss from recurring as a result of this issue:

Update the NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter driver and NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter firmware (bundled as a single download) to version 4.0.516 as follows:

  1. Go to

    www.hp.com

  2. Select "Software and Driver Downloads."
  3. Type "HP NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Gigabit Server Adapter" in the product search box.
  4. Select the appropriate operating system.
  5. Select Firmware-Network
  6. Select HP NC-Series QLogic Online Firmware Upgrade Utility and Diagnostic Tool and click "Download"

Then, set the fan speed to "Increased Cooling" in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) as follows:

  1. Press F9 on server boot to enter RBSU.
  2. Select "Advanced Options."
  3. Select "Thermal Configuration"
  4. Choose "Increased Cooling" and press "Enter" to save the selection.

Increased cooling operates fans at higher speeds to provide additional cooling. For more information on using RBSU, refer to the HP ROM-Based Setup Utility User Guide, available here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00191707/c00191707.pdf

If the NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter is installed in any slot other than slot 1 or slot 3 , the following action should be taken:

The NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter driver and NC522SFP Dual Port 10GbE Server Adapter firmware (bundled as a single download) must be updated to version 4.0.516 as detailed above.
